Betong Shogun Oranges Rise as Southern Delicacy Boosting Yala Farmers’ Income to 167 Million Baht

The Ministry of Commerce has officially registered the “Betong Shogun Orange,”

also known by its new name “Phet Yala,” as the latest Geographical Indication (GI) product from Yala Province, following rock bananas from Bannang Sata and Sapad Nam durian.

This variety stands out with large fruit size, a green-orange skin, a unique aroma,

juicy flesh, a sweet-tart flavor, easy peeling, and no pulp residue.

Originally a Chinese sweet green orange, it is grown in Betong District’s hot, humid climate with heavy rainfall and limited sunlight, resulting in a distinctive taste different from typical oranges.

Its popularity among consumers and tourists has made it a signature souvenir of southern Thailand.

The GI registration enhances product value and builds consumer confidence

through a quality control system meeting strict standards. Currently, Thailand has 232 registered GI products, generating over 78 billion baht annually.
