“Community Rice Centers” Support Technology Utilization to Increase Yield, Reduce Costs, and Improve Quality

The issue of high production costs and low yields is still a challenge faced by Thai farmers. "Community Rice Centers" have been established as knowledge hubs to provide farmers with modern technology to improve their farming practices, emphasizing the use of technology and innovation to increase productivity and reduce costs. Mr. Natthakit Khongthip, Director-General of the Rice Department, stated that farmers are still using traditional, costly farming methods that do not yield as much as they could. Therefore, technology is needed to assist.

Community Rice Centers recommend farmers start by plowing in rice stubble and weeds to allow the soil to rest, and by using microorganisms to decompose waste materials, thereby improving soil quality. They also suggest using green manure and producing organic fertilizers to reduce the use of chemicals in farming processes. The use of modern technology, such as drones for releasing microorganisms and rice planting machines, can enhance efficiency and reduce costs by up to 50%.

The alternate wetting and drying method of rice planting is another technology promoted by the Community Rice Centers, particularly in irrigated areas where water control is optimal. This not only increases tillering but also reduces methane emissions, contributing to the reduction of global warming.

Community Rice Centers thus play a crucial role in improving rice production quality by disseminating effective and modern technology, enabling farmers to increase the quality of their yield, reduce costs, and promote environmentally friendly and sustainable rice production.
