Transforming 10 Canals into Landmarks : A Creative Public Space Development Initiative

His Majesty the King has emphasized the importance of canal restoration to enhance the quality of life for residents living along canals. Recognizing that each canal is steeped in history and serves as a traditional hub for Thai communities, His Majesty has personally studied the canals and spearheaded restoration efforts since 2018.

With thorough research, His Majesty has directed the Royal Household, government agencies, and the private sector to dredge and beautify various canals. Today, over 10 beautifully restored canals with clear water have become recreational areas for the public, including :

  1. Mae Kha Canal, Chiang Mai
  2. Bang Lamphu Canal
  3. Prem Prachakorn Canal
  4. Phadung Krung Kasem Canal
  5. Khu Muang Derm (Khlong Lot)
  6. Wat Sangwech Canal
  7. Saen Saeb Canal
  8. Wat Tri Thotsathep Canal
  9. Wat Ratchabophit Khlong Lot Canal
  10. Wat Ratchanadda Khlong Lot Canal

Alongside canal development, electrical and communication wires have been moved underground to enhance the scenery along the canal banks. Additionally, homeless people have been relocated to government shelters, transforming these areas into new public recreational and tourist spaces accessible to all.

This canal restoration initiative is not only about environmental improvement but also about enhancing citizens' quality of life and creating inviting public spaces, turning these canals into landmarks for everyone to enjoy.
