Is social security a requirement for all foreign workers?

       With regard to foreign workers who come to work in Thailand, in order to receive protection and have welfare and various benefits, the Social Security Office requires that foreign workers who have entered the country legally and are working legally register with the social security system to gain benefits covering the following seven cases:

  • In case of danger or illness;
  • In case of childbirth;
  • In case of disability;
  • In case of death;
  • Child allowance;
  • In case of old age;
  • In case of unemployment.

The documents required for social security registration, which covers the whole group of foreign workers/ aliens/ highland people, consist of the following:

  1. The insured registration form (Sor.Por.Sor.1-03);
  2. Copy of passport or document showing a passport representation;
  3. Work permit;
  4. A copy of a special non-immigrant visa (Smart Visa).

       If registering an alien/ foreign employee with a Smart Visa, employers may submit documents for registration using Smart Visa instead of a work permit. More information about social insurance is available at  www.sso.go.th or hotline 1506, 24 hours daily.
