Explore the Magnificent Seven Seas of Chumphon - Grand Sand Dune

For those who enjoy witnessing the extraordinary beauty of nature, make sure you visit the province of Chumphon. This region boasts an 'unseen' side of Thailand, as its beauty is so extraordinary that it can be hard to believe it's a part of our nation. Among its treasures is the Grand Sand Dune, a stunning spectacle worth exploring.

Situated in Pak Khlong, Pathio District, Chumphon province, the Grand Sand Dune is a natural wonder on the coastal sandy hill. This phenomenon dates back to the end of the Pleistocene Epoch or Ice Age, approximately 1.8 million to 14,000 years ago.

The formation of this fascinating landscape can be attributed to the powerful storms along the seashore during the monsoon season. These storms brought forth large amounts of sand, gradually amassing it into small hills. As these hills encountered the arid conditions and intense sunlight outside the monsoon season, they began to resemble a desert, hence the term "sand dune". This phenomenon is uniquely Thai, as it is the only occurrence of its kind in the country.

Furthermore, the vegetation around the Grand Sand Dune is quite distinct. It serves as the birthplace of a specific type of sandhill forest, home to over 160 indigenous plant species. Some of these species are very rare and boast uniquely odd shapes and appearances. The types of vegetation range from mangroves and beach forests to wet and dry tropical forests, all cohabitating harmoniously within this sand dune landscape.

This unique combination of geology and botany makes the Grand Sand Dune in Chumphon a must-visit for every nature lover. Its raw, untamed beauty is a testament to the diverse landscapes that Thailand offers. So, the next time you are seeking a memorable nature experience, don't forget to add this 'unseen' spectacle to your itinerary.

At the same time, the Grand Sand Dune is just a short distance from Pathio District, along the coastal route of Chumphon. It is part of the still-pristine Chumphon coastline, which starts from Thung Wua Laen Beach, through the Grand Sand Dune and Tham Thong Beach, and leads all the way to Bang Saphan Noi District in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. Why not take a detour from the main southern highway and explore this route? You'll discover several interesting stops along the way, such as the “Crab Bank”, Teab Island, Ko Ran Ped and Ko Ran Kai, Leamthaen, and of course, the Grand Sand Dune.

When you reach the Grand Sand Dune, park your car at the front and walk up the bridge. Just a 200-meter meander will lead you to a panoramic viewing platform. Here, you can enjoy the sight of the long bridge stretching across the sand dunes down to the beach below. It's a perfect spot for a photo op. From the bridge, you can also soak in the tranquil beauty of Chumphon's shoreline. There's a pathway leading down to the beach, where along the way, you can observe the distinctive layered shades of the sand dunes. The fine grains of sand covering the ground are swept in by the wind, creating an intriguing visual.

At the end of the path, you'll encounter another panoramic viewing platform, closer to the beach this time. From here, you have the option of descending to the beach below, where the vast open sea stretches to the horizon. The blue waters and peaceful atmosphere make this place an excellent spot for relaxation. The tranquility of the Grand Sand Dune is a soothing experience, making it a worthwhile deviation from the beaten path.
