Historical Tourism: Ancient Fossils at Museum of Prehistoric Elephants in Satun

Satun is the province with the most fossils discovered in Thailand, and one interesting tourist attraction here is the Thung Wa Museum of Ancient Elephants under Thung Wa Subdistrict Administrative Organization, in Thung Wa District.

Here, they have academic information and a geological conservation center, as well as public relations and promotion of learning and raising awareness among the locals about how to preserve the geological resources. It covers four districts, which are Mueang Satun, La Ngu, Tung Wa, and Manang. Their geographic features include limestone mountain ranges and islands where prehistoric fossils were discovered.

Inside the center, the area is divided into an exhibition zone displaying stories about Thai elephants, and the history, lifestyle, local art, and culture of Satun Province from the past up to the present day. More importantly, there is an exhibition displaying the prehistoric fossils of an elephant which were found in Stegodon Cave, along with other fossils, and it reveals how elephants are bonded with Thai peoples' ways of life. The highlights of the exhibition are the molar tooth fossil of a Stegodon elephant and the fossils of the teeth of ancient rhinos.
