Health Research Collaboration! 8 ASEAN Countries - Canada Unite to Tackle Alcohol Issues

Researchers from eight ASEAN countries and Canada held a workshop in Bangkok, focusing on analyzing the influence of the alcohol industry on policy development in the region.

The research highlighted that the alcohol industry affects policy-making in several countries, particularly in Lesotho, Malawi, Uganda, and Botswana, where policies emphasize individual responsibility for drinking without considering the environmental factors influencing consumption. The industry's involvement in developing legislation has had severe impacts on public health.

Experts recommend that governments reconsider policies without allowing the alcohol industry to interfere in public health decisions. Additionally, strict measures should be enforced to control alcohol marketing and advertising, as alcohol regulation is not just a business matter but has far-reaching health and social impacts. Therefore, policy reform should prioritize the well-being of the public to create a healthier and more sustainable society.
