Thailand Drives Forward! 77 Provincial Sign Language Interpreter Positions Unlocking Access to Rights for 400K People with Disabilities

The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS) and the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD) have launched a major initiative to create 77 sign language interpreter positions across all provinces by 2025-2026.

This effort aims to eliminate communication barriers for more than 432,495 hearing-impaired individuals, enhancing their access to vital services such as healthcare, legal rights, employment, and information.

A Three-Phase Strategy for Success

1️⃣ Short Term: Fast-track training of 180 interpreters through a 135-hour course

2️⃣ Mid term: Hire interpreters to serve at disability service centers nationwide, with a monthly salary of 18,000 baht

3️⃣ Long Term: Support certification studies, develop AI-based sign language interpreting innovations, and deploy communication technologies (e.g., TTRS Live Chat/Video)

This program not only expands opportunities for the disabled but also opens career paths for the deaf community, cultivating “model interpreters” who understand local cultural nuances.

Additionally, interpreter skill assessment units will be expanded in collaboration with universities and deaf associations to establish sustainable interpreting standards.

Thailand is turning challenges into opportunities because communication is a fundamental right everyone must enjoy!
