Coastal Resource Rehabilitation Project under the Royal Initiative in Pattani and Narathiwat Provinces

On October 1, 2001, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, along with His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn (Rama X), visited the people of Ban La-Weng, Don Sai Subdistrict, Mai khaen District, Pattani Province. The local fishermen petitioned for royal assistance as coastal marine resources were being destroyed by large fishing vessels. In addition, the increasing exploitation of coastal resources and the degradation of the marine ecosystem caused a rapid decline in marine life, leaving local fishermen in distress.

Her Majesty Queen Sirikit presented the matter to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, who advised an urgent consultation with relevant experts. His royal decision led to the establishment of the Coastal Resource Rehabilitation Project in Pattani and Narathiwat to increase coastal fishery production by restoring the ecosystem. The project involved creating artificial reefs, planting mangrove and wetland forests, and growing seagrass.

His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn, has continued and expanded this royal initiative. His Majesty graciously ordered the Royal Thai Navy to study the influence of ocean currents, which may change and affect coastal waters. In collaboration with other agencies, train carriages have been submerged at depths of over 20 meters to create marine habitats.
