The transform traditional markets project is designed to promote Thai Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to adopt digital technologies and innovations, allowing businesses to thrive and survive in the continuously changing environment. This project emphasizes on creating a mutually beneficial environment between digital SMEs and other business SMEs, including individual vendors, street vendors, and floating markets. Organizing digital technology exhibitions will stimulate effective market management, promotion, and development of digital market prototypes.
The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) has been pushing the Transform project. In its inaugural year of 2021, the project was piloted in 10 provinces: Bangkok, Nakhon Sawan, Nakhon Pathom, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Lop Buri, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Samut Sakhon, and Samut Prakan. It managed to transform around 300 traditional markets into digital ones, with more than 30,050 vendors participating in the project, generating an economic value of over 300 million baht.
In 2023, which marks the second year of the project, it was expanded to target 25 provinces nationwide. Rayong province is one of the target areas that is set to drive the project under the Smart City model. This local-level prototype focuses on creating a smart urban municipality. Rayong province has been collaborating with the Digital Economy Promotion Agency to drive the Smart City initiative within the province. Together, they have established a local-level prototype and the Rayong Digital Economy Promotion Plan for 2023 - 2027 to stimulate digital economy growth in the area, in terms of manpower, economy, society, and digital environment, thereby expanding the province's economic potential.
Participation in the "Transform: The New Generation of Traditional Markets" project will help promote and support local entrepreneurs in the province to gain knowledge and understanding of digital technology. This will help them to develop their businesses towards new opportunities in trading and services, aligning with the changing global trends.
