The formation of this fascinating landscape can be attributed to the powerful storms along the seashore during the monsoon season. These storms brought forth large amounts of sand, gradually amassing it into small hills. As these hills encountered the arid conditions and intense sunlight outside the monsoon season, they began to resemble a desert, hence the term "sand dune". At the same time, the Grand Sand Dune is just a short distance from Pathio District, along the coastal route of Chumphon. It is part of the still-pristine Chumphon coastline, which starts from Thung Wua Laen Beach, through the Grand Sand Dune and Tham Thong Beach, and leads all the way to Bang Saphan Noi District in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.
