Thailand to Push Transboundary Environmental Agenda for Thailand–Myanmar HLC Meeting

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin has directed the Pollution Control Department (PCD) to work with the Department of Border Affairs under the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters to propose cross-border environmental cooperation at the 9th Thailand–Myanmar High–Level Committee (HLC) meeting.

PCD Director Surin Worakijthamrong stated that the department met with the Department of Border Affairs on July 3, 2026, to prepare for environmental topics at the HLC meeting. The agenda will focus on cooperation to prevent and address cross-border forest fires, haze, and water pollution in key border river basins.

The Director noted that the PCD and the Department of Border Affairs have consistently advanced cooperation on forest fire and transboundary haze prevention. This includes supporting the establishment of three cross-border forest fire and haze monitoring centers in Myanmar, located in Tachileik, Kengtung, and Taunggyi, which serve as hubs for monitoring, information exchange, and coordination among relevant agencies. The PCD is also preparing to provide air quality monitoring equipment to further expand cooperation.

To address cross-border water pollution, the PCD proposed that both countries jointly and continuously monitor water and sediment quality and exchange water quality data. The department is prepared to provide technical expertise and support the establishment of water quality monitoring stations in suitable areas to enhance surveillance and joint river basin management.

The department recommended that the Department of Border Affairs present these issues at the 9th Thailand–Myanmar HLC meeting to promote concrete cooperation in preventing, addressing, and monitoring forest fires, haze, and cross-border water pollution, including heavy metal contamination.
