Sirakran Exhibition in Remembrance of His Majesty’s Royal Benevolence in Water Management: The Royal Approach to Sustainable Flood Solutions

The Siriraj Museum Unit is hosting a special exhibition to honor His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great for his contributions to water management and flood prevention. The exhibition, titled “Sirakran Phra Bhubarn Nawamin: The Royal Approach to Sustainable Flood Solutions”, will be held from October 9 to 21, 2024, at the reception hall of the Siriraj Pimuksthan Museum, Bangkok.

This exhibition highlights His Majesty King Rama IX’s invaluable royal initiatives, with over 4,000 projects launched under his reign. Notably, more than 3,000 of these projects focus on water management, including his clear and exemplary approach to flood control. One such initiative was the construction of the Khlong Lat Pho flood diversion canal, which shortened the water flow from the Chao Phraya River, effectively mitigating flood issues in Bangkok and its surrounding areas.

His Majesty placed great importance on resolving flood issues through detailed study and analysis of affected areas’ physical characteristics. His research involved reviewing documents, maps, and scientific reports, along with conducting on-site inspections himself. These insights allowed him to propose targeted flood prevention and mitigation strategies for Bangkok, which is prone to flooding during the rainy season.

The exhibition also revisits the major flood of 1983, which caused severe damage and lasted for four months. During this time, His Majesty conducted six field inspections by helicopter, boat, and his royal vehicle. He was deeply involved in flood prevention planning, even using his personal flashlight to examine maps at night to ensure efficient management of flood-related problems.

This exhibition not only disseminates knowledge about His Majesty’s brilliance in water management but also honors his royal benevolence and perseverance in addressing flood issues that have long impacted the lives of people in Bangkok and neighboring areas. It serves as a valuable opportunity for the public to learn about and appreciate his contributions to water management.

The exhibition will be open to the public from October 9 to 21, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM (closed on Tuesdays and public holidays) at the reception hall of the Siriraj Pimuksthan Museum. This event commemorates His Majesty’s royal benevolence and serves as an inspiration for future generations to recognize the importance of intelligent and sustainable water resource management.
