Bangkok (27 Oct.24) – A breathtaking display of Thailand's rich cultural heritage unfolded today as the Royal Barge Procession graced the Chao Phraya River. This majestic event celebrated the 6th Cycle Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty King Rama X, which fell on 28 July 2024.
A fleet of 52 royal barges, each adorned with intricate carvings and manned by 2,200 rowers, sailed along the river. The procession was divided into five rows and three lines, spanning a length of 1,280 meters and a width of 90 meters. The procession was a mesmerizing spectacle, showcasing the grandeur and splendor of the Thai monarchy.
The four major royal barges were the Suphannahong, or Golden Swan; the Narai Song Suban King Rama IX; the Anantanakkharat, or Multi-headed Naga; and the Anekkachatphutchong, or Innumerable Naga Figures.
The procession began at the Wasukri pier and traversed the Chao Phraya River, passing iconic landmarks such as the Rama VIII Bridge and the Pin Klao Bridge. The final destination was Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn, where His Majesty the King presented Kathin robes to Buddhist monks.
This year’s procession was the second during the reign of His Majesty King Rama X. The first took place on 12 December 2019, as the concluding chapter of His Majesty’s coronation ceremony.
