GISTDA Collaborates with ICEYE Finland to Strengthen Thailand's Disaster Surveillance System

The Geo-informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) have partnered with ICEYE, the world leader in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology from Finland, in the "GISTDA – ICEYE EO Satellite Joint Development Workshop". This collaboration will establish a strong foundation for the Thai space industry and deepen the relationship between Thailand and Finland.

GISTDA and ICEYE will focus on the usage of SAR to address the increasingly severe and complex challenges of climate change. In the past, Thailand often encountered difficulties in monitoring disasters during rainy season. This was due to dense clouds blocking the vision of optical satellites. However, SAR can both see through clouds and operate even in pitch darkness. Therefore, this technology serves as a beacon of light in effectively monitoring recurring disasters such as flooding, subsidence, and coastal erosion 24 hours a day.

Aside from disaster prevention and management, SAR satellite data also plays a crucial role in driving Thailand’s economy. Not only can SAR satellite data provide accurate soil moisture assessments during rainy season but also enhance maritime security by tracking vessel movements to prevent illegal fishing and territorial waters encroachment. GISTDA hopes to create more opportunities for Thai people to be invested in space data, empowering satellite technology for sustainable future.
