Moving Gastronomy Diplomacy Forward through the Use of Food Industry

The Government has emphasized its support for the development of Thailand’s “soft power” through the use of the food industry in promoting gastronomy diplomacy.

Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin, along with Minister of Tourism and Sports Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol and Minister Attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Puangpet Chunlaiad, attended a presentation on Thailand Soft Power Halal and Future Food on 2 October 2023 at Government House. The presentation was made by Mr. Boonlert Ongpaiboon, Vice Chairman of the Processed Food and Future Food Committee, Thai Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Boonlert said that the halal industry in Thailand grew by 7.5 percent from 2021 to 2025. Thai halal exports are well recognized in the world market. Halal food accounts for 20 percent of Thai food exports, and Thailand mainly exports halal food (about 60 percent) to Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam.

Government Spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said that the Prime Minister saw vast opportunities for Thai halal products to grow further because there are numerous consumers who have great potential for spending, especially in the category of “future food.”

He pointed out that the Government placed importance on funding sources and marketing to help improve prices of agricultural products, as well as providing knowledge about the production of various forms of Thai food to attract tourists. It would also open up greater opportunities for startups in the field of food production to do business.

The Government Spokesperson said that the Prime Minister had urged relevant government agencies to work in an integrated manner with the private sector in promoting food security and developing Thailand as a major global halal food producer.
