The Department of Public Works and Town and Country Planning, under the Ministry of Interior, has been carrying out a project to expand the development of model areas to improve the people’s quality of life, in accordance with the sustainable agronomy principle at the heart of the royal initiative.
The project is to honor His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua (Rama X) for the “Celebrations on the Auspicious Occasion of His Majesty the King's 6th Cycle Birthday Anniversary 28th July 2024."
Apart from helping ease flood and drought problems, it will also build facilities to store water for local use. The areas developed under this project can be used as model sites based on sustainable agronomy in order to upgrade the people’s quality of life and bring about “change for good.”
Moreover, the project will contribute to a campaign to raise people’s awareness of soil and water conservation and rehabilitation, under the concept of “sustainable soil and water for better life."
It is being carried out in six pilot provinces, namely Phayao, Nakhon Nayok, Chanthaburi, Kanchanaburi, Satun, and Ubon Ratchathani. These provinces will emphasize the application of the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy and New Theory in Agriculture to develop sustainable agronomy.
Inspired by the vision of King Rama IX, the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy is an approach to life and conduct which is applicable at every level, from the individual through the family and community to the management and development of the nation. It places humanity at the center of development and sustainability at the core of all efforts, with an emphasis on well-being rather than wealth. The New Theory is seen as an example of the application of the Sufficiency Economy philosophy. It is a model of a self-reliant family farm for agricultural practices.
The sustainable agronomy principle, developed from the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, is also in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
