“Cha Lom” is utilized as a symbol of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference 2022, also known as APEC (APEC 2022), which is being held by Thailand. Its meaning and identity also reflect APEC’s and Thailand’s respective identities.
Many people wonder how Cha Lom will fit in with APEC.
“Cha Lom” represents the main theme of the APEC meeting in 2022, namely OPEN: Cha Lom has an open end that can be used to carry things, thus as if it represents open trade and investment, CONNECT: because Cha Lom is used to carry things for transport, it is comparable to the interconnectedness in the region, and BALANCE: Cha Lom made from natural materials is therefore considered environmentally friendly and in line with the BCG economic model that is an important agenda in Thailand and is pushing for the APEC stage this 2022.
In the past, “Cha Lom” was a wicker container that was commonly used in all regions of Thailand, most people used it for storing things. It is made from woven bamboo with thin hammers in a Cha Lew or Ta Keng pattern. For tourists who are interested in buying Cha Lom as a souvenir, it is not difficult to find it at general souvenir shops.
