Where do Thai GI products go internationally?

Georapgical IDentification: GI

       Unique products and geographical indication identity (Georapgical IDentification: GI) is a mark applied to goods from a specific manufacturing origin. which the quality or reputation of the product as a result of the production in such area.

       In Thailand, many GI products are the result of local wisdom or specific geographical characteristics of that locality. GI registration is beneficial for both consumers and producers, for consumers to gain confidence in the product, and for producers to prevent false claims, greatly increasing the value of the product, especially in the international market.

       The Department of Intellectual Property has filed an application for registration in a foreign country for protection as well for Thai GI products which are popular with foreign consumers. Currently, 8 items have been registered for GI, namely Thung Kula Rong Hai Hom Mali Rice, Doi Tung Coffee, Doi Chang Coffee, and Muang Phatthalung Sangyod Rice, in the European Union, Isaan traditional Thai silk Phetchaburi, Lamphun Sweet tamarind, Lamphun Golden Dried Longan from Vietnam, Doi Tung Coffee from Cambodia, Lamphun Brocade silk from Indonesia and India.

       And there are 10 Thai products under consideration for registration, including Khao Yai wine in the European Union, and Thung Kula Rong Hai jasmine rice. Phetchabun sweet tamarind, Tubtim Siam Pomelo at Pak Phanang Prachin, Ratchaburi Durian, Sweet young coconut in the People's Republic of China, Doi Tung coffee, Doi Chang coffee, Huai Mun pineapple in Japan, Thung Kula Rong Hai jasmine rice. Muang Phatthalung Sangyod Rice In Indonesia, Thung Kula Rong Hai Hom Mali Rice, Muang Phatthalung Sangyod Rice Tubtim Siam Pak Phanang pomelo in Malaysia.
