Road Linkage Cooperation between Thailand and Myanmar

     Thailand and Myanmar moved forward with transport cooperation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Initial Implementation of Cross-Border Transport Agreements in the Mekong Subregion (IICBTA) at the Mae Sot – Myanmar border crossing point on 13 March 2019. The agreement deals with transporting goods and passengers between each other. The draft supplementary chapter, which pertains to the Mae Sot – Myawadee border crossing and along the Eastern-Western Economic Corridor (EWEC), includes the extension of the route to the Tilawa Special Economic Zone in Myanmar and Laem Chabang Port. The two parties started the interchange operation on 1 November 2019.

     There is also the construction of the Endu-Thaton Road, for which the Thai side has proposed to assist Myanmar in improving the road by the Department of Highways. The Endu – Hpa-An Road Range design is 24 kilometers, and the Hpa-An – Tha-An Road Range is 36 kilometers. It is an extension and repair route along the Eastern-West Economic Corridor.
