Use of “big data” warehouses to develop the agricultural sector under the BCG Model

      The growth and strengthening of the agricultural sector is one of the strategic goals set by the Cabinet, which must be accelerated. The goal in the next five years is to change the agricultural system of Thailand to be highly efficient, with technology and innovation combined to tackle the “problem landscape,” which requires mechanisms to operate in many ways and areas, and one of them is using a “big data” warehouse to develop the agricultural sector, in accordance with the BCG Model.

      The use of data warehouses to increase production efficiency and balance production and marketing in the agricultural sector requires a shift in the production of single-use agricultural commodities, which are vulnerable to global price volatility and natural disasters, to a modern agricultural model that produces a variety of premium agriculture goods by leveraging the big data in production planning that overcomes challenges and turns obstacles into opportunities. The mechanics of creating and using the big data warehouse are summarized below:

 - To integrate agriculture-related information from departments and develop it into a warehouse containing all the necessary data and providing broad access and utilization (sharing data);

 - To invest in communications and IT infrastructure so that farmers have the opportunity to access government services thoroughly;

 - To provide a knowledge management unit that acts as a link between knowledge production units and technology, with a Technology Promotion Unit that would enhance production efficiency;

 - To develop an incentive system that would persuade farmers to participate in delivering information at the local level that is related to the production of agricultural products.
