Cultural tourism – Ban Ko Klang, Krabi Province

Ko Klang community in Krabi Province is one of the communities in Krabi that has promoted community-based tourism. Thai and foreign tourists should not miss a visit to this community because of its unique local culture with a blend of Buddhist and Thai-Muslim people living together. It is an old fishing village that used to rely on agriculture and traditional crafts within families. However, with tourism development, the community has developed its knowledge and products, resulting in various products such as the "Pate" cloth-making group, the "Hua Tong" boat-building group, and products made from coconut.

The highlight is the "Sang Yod" rice, as the locals confirm that the combination of sea spray and rainfall makes the rice here sticky, soft, and delicious. Sang Yod rice from the Ko Klang community is a type of rice that is planted only once a year. It has high nutritional value and is also high-quality organic rice, thanks to the planting process, harvesting, and rice milling, all done by the locals on the island.

In addition, there is also a group of Hua Thong model boats. Here, they have modeled the Hua Thong boats into OTOP products that are famous in Krabi Province. In the past, Hua Thong boats were an essential vehicle of transportation for fishermen going out to catch fish on the seas. As time passed, Hua Thong boats remained crucial to the fishermen and were even more helpful as they transported tourists from the mainland to Ko Klang.

Another feature worth your notice is the Pate housewives production group. Here, you can learn the Pate fabric manufacturing process: start with a large piece of white cloth, make a pattern with wax, stretch it taut on the frame, and dye with vibrant colors on the intricate designs.

If you're not tired yet, you can have fun with clam picking or digging with the fishermen on Ko Klang, where you can learn how to search for and observe each type of clam with the locals. In addition, Ko Klang fishermen also have traditional wisdom in fishing that has been passed down from previous generations, especially in making “shallow bamboo stake traps,” which are hard for the fish to see.

When traveling to the Ko Klang community, you must take a longtail boat at Chao Fah Pier, Muang District, Krabi, to cross to Hin Pier. Once you arrive at Ko Klang, you can use the shuttle service to explore the island or rent a bicycle to ride around and engage in activities according to their interests.

Visitors can come for a day trip or stay overnight, because there are homestays here that locals have opened to accommodate visitors.
