Reflecting the Health of Thailand’s Seas: Mother-and-Calf Dugongs and Hawksbill Turtles Spotted at Ao Nam Mao, Krabi

Great news from Krabi’s waters! 🐢✨ On May 29, 2025, the team from Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park conducted a drone survey and discovered a healthy mother-and-calf dugong pair grazing on seagrass at Ao Nam Mao, alongside nine hawksbill turtles in the same area —a clear sign that Thailand’s marine environment is recovering well!

This success comes from Thailand’s long-term conservation efforts, especially the Maya Bay restoration model, which closed the area for four years (2018–2022) to allow nature to heal. Coral reefs and seagrass beds have since flourished, positively impacting nearby Ao Nam Mao today.

This encouraging news reflects improved seawater quality and a stronger ecosystem. The park authorities plan to establish protected zones around seagrass beds to ensure safe habitats for dugongs and turtles. They also urge tour boat operators to exercise greater caution to help maintain the natural balance for future generations.
