Thailand and Laos Advance Cooperation to Tackle Transboundary Haze and PM2.5
Thailand’s Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Suchart Chomklin, recently met with the Minister of Agriculture and Environment of the Lao PDR, Linkham Douangsavanh, in Bangkok. The discussion focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation to address cross-border haze, air pollution, and PM 2.5 emissions, highlighting the long-standing friendly relations between the two neighboring countries.
To combat wildfire-related haze, Laos plans to study Thailand’s royal rainmaking techniques and adopt collaborative training in technology and forest management. 

These initiatives are designed to boost local economies through ecotourism and sustainable forestry, giving farmers viable alternatives to traditional slash-and-burn methods.

Thailand is ready to share its expertise in wildfire management. To tackle the root causes of haze, the country is also proposing economic incentives to help farmers reduce agricultural burning. By promoting biomass energy and turning agricultural waste into a resource, both nations hope to eliminate open burning for good.

The partnership builds upon ongoing collaborative efforts, highlighted by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two ministries. This agreement serves as a framework to drive the Joint Plan of Action under the "Clear Sky Strategy" (2027–2030), facilitating data exchange, air quality monitoring systems, and direct communication channels for timely joint responses.

This is about more than just data exchange; it’s a commitment to protecting the health of citizens on both sides of the border by turning regional cooperation into concrete, local action.
