Thailand Advances Net Zero Healthcare Strategy

The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) is advancing its Net Zero MOPH policy to develop a low-carbon, climate-resilient healthcare system. The agency recently signed agreements with the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO), SCG, PTT Oil and Retail Business (PTT OR), and Bangchak Corporation to support clean energy, carbon management, innovation, and circular economy practices in public health facilities.

Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat said the ministry’s plans involve reducing carbon emissions by 25 percent by 2030, by 50 percent by 2035, and achieving net zero by 2050 through cleaner energy, electric mobility, resource-efficient hospital operations, waste management, sustainable food services, and expanded green spaces.

The MOPH has installed rooftop solar systems at 1,683 health facilities, covering more than 90 percent of service units and totaling about 130 megawatts of capacity. The systems save an estimated 687 million baht in electricity costs each year and reduce carbon emissions by more than 88,000 metric tons annually.

The ministry also plans to have at least 100 hospitals enter the carbon credit certification process by 2026. Bang Bo Hospital in Samut Prakan province was the first hospital certified by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization and is preparing to sell carbon credits. Partner organizations will provide support in carbon certification, waste management, clean energy, AI technology, and sustainable aviation fuel production.
