Thailand Advances Climate Change Law to Tackle Global Warming

The Department of Climate Change and Environment (DDCE) is accelerating work on Thailand’s proposed climate change act following directives from Minister of the Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin who directed the prompt submission of the draft legislation to ensure timely enforcement. The act aims to position Thailand as a regional leader in the low-carbon economy and strengthen public resilience to climate-related disasters.
In response, DDCE director-general Dr. Phirun Saiyasitpanich and officials from the Office of the Council of State conducted the first reading of the draft act, with Sansern Kraichitti, Chairperson of the 7th Council of State Committee, presided over the electronic meeting.

The draft act introduces four major mechanisms, including the establishment of a national committee to set Thailand’s net-zero greenhouse gas emission targets, a climate risk management framework to support adaptation efforts, and greenhouse gas reduction measures designed to meet international obligations and strengthen trade competitiveness. The legislation also proposes a climate fund to support investments in emission reduction projects and help finance Thailand’s transition toward a low-carbon economy and society. Officials stated that the law is designed to strengthen Thailand’s long-term climate governance and improve the country’s resilience against climate-related disasters.
