Acting Thai PM Assesses Border Security After Cross-Border Clashes

A high-level Thai delegation led by Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai arrived in Surin province on 9 August to evaluate security conditions along the Thailand-Cambodia border following deadly clashes last month.

The delegation, which includes Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa and Prime Minister's Office Minister Jiraporn Sindhuprai, is conducting security briefings and meeting with displaced residents to discuss relief efforts and plans for their eventual return home.

Heavy weapons fighting on 24 July devastated large swaths of Surin province, forcing mass evacuations across five districts, 46 subdistricts and 571 villages in the border region. Provincial authorities established 84 emergency shelters to house 22,854 evacuees, while another 9,631 people sought refuge with family members.

Though some of the 32,485 initially displaced residents have begun returning home, military restrictions remain in place in Phanom Dong Rak district's Ta Miang and Bak Dai subdistricts, where troops continue operations.

Officials are coordinating with provincial authorities on humanitarian support and security assessments as they prepare for the gradual reopening of restricted areas in the coming days.
