Thailand Ignites "Green Transformation" to Pivot Toward a High-Value Wellness and Innovation Economy

Thailand has announced a strategic shift toward a "Green Transformation," positioning the nation to thrive under strict global carbon regulations and evolving trade rules. Prof. Dr. Yoschanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), emphasized that transitioning to a green economy is now the primary mechanism for restructuring the country. By evolving the BCG model into a robust Wellness Economy, Thailand aims to integrate food security, clean air, and advanced medical technology into a sustainable economic engine.

The strategy is driven by two main pillars: leveraging technology to slash carbon footprints in traditional sectors like agriculture, and accelerating future industries such as Electric Vehicles (EV) and Space Technology. MHESI is adopting a "Backcasting" research model—planning backward from future goals—to ensure that national budgets and innovations directly counteract international trade barriers and bolster economic security.

To realize this vision by 2030, Thailand is fostering an innovation ecosystem through Open Science policies and international partnerships designed to commercialize research and maximize Intellectual Property (IP) value. This proactive pivot transforms environmental challenges into a competitive edge, signaling to the global community that Thailand is ready to lead as a high-tech, responsible innovation hub, setting a new gold standard for sustainable economic development.
