Thailand and Bhutan: 3 Days of Friendship, Faith & Future Cooperation

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul landed at Paro on 30 October to a personal welcome from Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and a white Khadhar scarf, the traditional symbol of friendship. It is the first official visit by a Thai prime minister in eight years, in the year the two nations mark 37 years of diplomatic ties.

Talks in Thimphu set the tone: more trade, investment and cooperation in healthcare, education and clean energy, with the Thailand–Bhutan Free Trade Agreement due to begin on 1 January 2027. The program also made room for the Thai volunteers serving in Bhutan, the people who turn agreements on paper into everyday friendship.

A day later, three agreements covering healthcare, agricultural finance and clean energy were signed, and the Thai delegation paused at the Great Buddha Dordenma, a reminder of the faith the two peoples share.

The journey ends today (1 November) in Gelephu, where Bhutan is raising 108 stupas in a single day. The Thai Premier is scheduled to join the ceremony and have an audience with Their Majesties the King and Queen before flying home this evening.

Three days, three agreements, and a friendship that looks set to grow.
