Thailand Prepares Fuel-Saving Measures; Petrol Station Hours May Be Restricted After Songkran

The Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has signalled that fuel-saving measures are being prepared, including a possible review of petrol station operating hours, as Thailand seeks to preserve domestic oil supplies amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Speaking at the Ministry of Interior, the Prime Minister stated that the government is developing measures to ensure sufficient fuel reserves for domestic use. Among the proposals under consideration is a plan to restrict petrol station operations between 10.00 p.m. and 5.00 a.m. However, he emphasized that any such measure would likely take effect only after the Songkran holiday, allowing the public to complete holiday travel without disruption.

The Prime Minister also announced plans to expedite the establishment of a new Centre for Administration and Monitoring of the Middle East Conflict, aimed at coordinating national responses to energy-related risks. He noted that strict energy conservation measures may be required depending on developments in global oil supply.

In addition, the government is reviewing legal mechanisms to implement fuel management directives efficiently. Authorities are also studying refinery margins and the fuel pricing structure to help
manage domestic energy costs.

Officials stressed that the government’s approach seeks to balance supply security with maintaining normal daily activities, particularly during the peak Songkran travel period, while preparing contingency measures should the situation escalate.
