Thailand Leverages IMF–World Bank Insights to Power SMEs via "Small AI"

The Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) under the Ministry of Commerce has reviewed the outcomes of the 2026 IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings. It is found that the global economy remains resilient despite ongoing uncertainty, driven mainly by investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital infrastructure.

Thailand stands among the top four economies with the highest AI hardware exports relative to GDP, alongside South Korea, Malaysia, and Taiwan. However, the IMF forecasts Thailand’s GDP growth at 2.1% for 2026–2027, so the country urgently needs to enhance productivity and transition toward higher value-added products and services.

Thailand's electronics sector has grown strongly. Exports of telephones and components jumped 117.5%, and exports of computers and parts rose 59.4%. Actual investment in AI and digital-related industries also exceeded THB 127 billion (about USD 3.6 billion) in the second quarter of 2026, making up nearly half of all actual investment in that period.
To help local businesses capture these opportunities, the World Bank introduced the concept of “Small AI: More and Better Jobs”. Small AI allows SMEs with limited capital and resources to optimize market analysis, inventory management, and overseas trade without the need for large-scale system investments.

In line with this approach, the Ministry of Commerce is pushing forward three key initiatives:
1️⃣ Promote the use of AI for data analysis, marketing and communication
2️⃣ Develop Small AI tools for specific sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing and logistics
3️⃣ Use AI to analyze overseas markets and boost exports

TPSO stressed that turning global economic trends into practical tools will help Thai SMEs cut costs, reach new markets and stay competitive in the long term. The IMF–World Bank insights give Thailand a clear roadmap for turning global tech momentum into real opportunities for local SMEs.
