The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine has launched the “Pho–Lanna NUAD THAI” (นวดไทยโพธิ์-ล้านนา) massage training programme to strengthen Thailand’s health tourism industry and support the country’s goal of becoming a regional Wellness Hub.
The initiative integrates the national Thai massage standard of Wat Pho (วัดโพธิ์) with distinctive Lanna wisdom, while promoting San Kamphaeng Hot Springs(น้ำ้ำ้ำ พุร้อนสันกำ กำ แพง) in Chiang Mai as a model world-class health tourism destination.
Dr. Pongsadhorn Pokpermpdee, M.D. (ดร.นพ.พงศธร พอกเพิ่มดี), Director-General of the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, said the programme combines two major Thai massage traditions—the Wat Pho approach, which focuses on the Sen Sib energy lines and Reusi Dat Ton (ฤาษีดัดตน) exercises, and the Lanna(ล้านนา) tradition with its unique therapeutic techniques. The curriculum also covers Thai traditional medicine fundamentals, specialised Pho–Lanna techniques, hydrotherapy, spa management, and foreign-language communication to enhance international standards.
The programme further emphasizes holistic care through a “Lanna Experience” based on the five senses, incorporating local architecture and attire, herbal drinks, indigenous aromas, music therapy, and refined massage techniques to add value and meet health tourism demand.
The initiative also supports the development of San Kamphaeng Hot Springs, a royal initiative project, by building the “Pho–Lanna” brand, developing wellness products from local resources, and upgrading professional standards of Thai massage practitioners to create sustainable income for local communities and strengthen Thailand’s position as a Wellness Hub.
