Thailand keen to up G2G shipments to Singapore

Thailand plans to expand government-to-government (G2G) agricultural trade with Singapore following the successful implementation of the first G2G rice trade agreement. The initiative reflects Thailand’s commitment to strengthening food security cooperation and promoting sustainable agricultural exports in the region.
The Ministry of Commerce reported that the first G2G rice trade agreement has been implemented under a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on rice trade between the Department of Foreign Trade of Thailand and the Singapore Food Agency. The MoC, valid for five years and renewable upon mutual consent, establishes a framework for formal G2G rice trade and sets a target for the sale of 100,000 tonnes of rice over five years.
This milestone represents an expansion of Thailand’s long-standing private sector rice exports to Singapore and reinforces confidence in Thailand’s agricultural products. The agreement also serves as a foundation for future trade in other agricultural goods, including pork, chicken, and fresh produce.
Singapore, which relies heavily on food imports, continues to prioritize food security amid global challenges such as climate change, geopolitical tensions, and pandemics. Thailand, with its strong agricultural base and food production capacity, is positioned as a key partner in ensuring food stability for its trading partners.
During the first nine months of 2025, Thailand exported 90,031 tonnes of rice to Singapore, representing a 5% year-on-year increase. Hom Mali rice accounted for 49.9% of the total volume, followed by white rice at 29% and Thai fragrant rice at 16.2%. Currently, Thailand ranks as the third largest rice supplier to Singapore, holding a 22.3% market share after India at 42.8% and Vietnam at 28.1%.
The Ministry of Commerce has also engaged in discussions with partners in ASEAN, the Middle East, Europe, and North America, many of which have expressed interest in adopting Thailand’s food security collaboration model. The initiative aligns with global trade diversification trends and enhances Thailand’s strategic role in international food supply chains.
This policy underscores Thailand’s potential to position its agricultural sector as a key driver of regional and global food security.
