Thai Textiles, Zero Waste! Transforming Fabric Scraps into New Value and Taking Thai Wisdom Further Around the World

Did you know? Thai textiles used in the meeting rooms of the 2026 IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings have been given a new lease on life as souvenir bags, proving that every piece of Thai fabric can have value!

Handwoven textiles featuring 39 patterns from 28 communities across 23 provinces throughout Thailand were used to decorate the venue and serve as sound-absorbing materials in the meeting rooms during the 2026 IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings, held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok. These textiles brought the wisdom, craftsmanship, and creativity of Thai communities to the global stage.

But the story of Thai textiles did not end when the decorations came down. Leftover fabric scraps were repurposed through a DIY fabric bag-making workshop, giving meeting participants the opportunity to create their own bags and take home a unique handmade souvenir from Thailand.

This initiative reflects the Zero Waste concept by maximizing resource efficiency, reducing waste, and creating new value from leftover materials—all in line with the principles of sustainable development.

From handwoven fabrics that tell the stories of Thai communities to handmade bags crafted by meeting participants, Thai textiles have become more than just decorative elements. They serve as a meaningful medium for sharing Thailand’s traditional wisdom, cultural heritage, and commitment to sustainability with people around the world.

Because when it comes to Thai textiles, fabric scraps do not have to go to waste. They can be the beginning of something new, carrying Thai craftsmanship and cultural value even further across the world.
