PRD Promotes Trusted AI and Asian Cultural Identity at International Media Forum

KUNMING, China – Mrs. Sudruetai Lertkasem, Director-General of the Government Public Relations Department (PRD), delivered remarks during the panel discussion “Story Like Water, Quietly Nourishing All Things” at the South and Southeast Asian Media Network (SSAMN) Annual Meeting 2026 in Kunming, China, on 14 July.

The forum, jointly organized by the Yunnan South and Southeast Asia International Communication Center and China Daily Asia Pacific, brought together media leaders and communication experts from across the region to discuss the future of media cooperation in the AI era.

Mrs. Sudruetai emphasized that effective storytelling today is not only about delivering facts but also about preserving cultural identity and fostering mutual understanding. While AI has greatly enhanced content creation and translation, she noted that AI systems developed without cultural context may misrepresent information and national identities. She therefore stressed the need to develop AI based on data that reflects Asia’s cultural values and regional context.

She also highlighted PRD’s efforts to develop an Intelligent and Trusted Media Ecosystem and Localized Media Data Pools to ensure that AI platforms and global search engines provide accurate, reliable, and culturally authentic information about Thailand.

The Director-General congratulated Dr. Watcharatiya Watcharobol, Computer Technical Officer (Professional Level) of PRD, for winning the top award at the global iSAFE Hackathon in Geneva, Switzerland, with Fake News Deep Verify, a bilingual AI application for real-time fact-checking that showcases Thailand’s growing strength in AI and media innovation.

To strengthen regional cooperation, Mrs. Sudruetai proposed three initiatives: Pan-Asian Media Data Alliance, Algorithmic Co-Production, and Collective Ethical Governance to promote trusted AI, combat misinformation, and address AI bias.

The forum featured keynote presentations and panel discussions with more than 200 media executives, academics, journalists, and influencers from South and Southeast Asia. Mrs. Sudruetai led the Thai delegation, which comprised Mr. Kasemsant Weerakun, independent media scholar, and representatives from MCOT, Thai PBS, and PRD.
