MHESI Positions Genomics as Future Growth Engine, Aiming to Become Regional Precision Medicine Hub

Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) has underscored genomics as a critical pillar for the country’s future, aiming to transform healthcare services to be safer, more advanced, and widely accessible, while positioning Thailand as a regional hub for precision medicine.

Speaking at the 5th Annual Conference of the Genetics Society of Thailand 2026, held under the theme “Genomics Thailand and the Future: Integrating Multi-Omics to Fully Understand Human Health,” the ministry’s permanent secretary highlighted the growing importance of genomic science in modern healthcare. The event brought together researchers, students, medical professionals, and stakeholders to exchange knowledge and strengthen collaboration.

Recent advances in human genetics and genome sequencing technologies have significantly reshaped global healthcare systems. In Thailand, genetic data is increasingly used to improve diagnosis, prevention, and personalized treatment. Applications include genetic screening for drug allergies, cancer risk assessment, newborn screening, and other precision medicine services tailored to individual patients.

The government has been actively driving the Genomics Thailand initiative through its integrated action plan (2020–2024), which includes building a national genomic database of 50,000 individuals, establishing DNA extraction centers, and developing over 700 specialized professionals. These efforts have laid a strong foundation for practical implementation.

Under the “Genomics Thailand in Action” phase, key services—such as breast cancer risk gene testing and screening for severe drug allergies—are being incorporated into Thailand’s universal healthcare scheme. Beyond healthcare benefits, genomics is expected to enhance national competitiveness, attract investment, and strengthen Thailand’s comprehensive health industry, supporting sustainable economic growth.
