“Loi Krathong Festival 2024” Emphasizes Safety and the Environment, Elevating It to a World Event

The “Loi Krathong Festival 2024” will take place on Friday, November 15, and will be celebrated across the country, particularly in areas adjacent to rivers, canals, and other bodies of water. This festival is an important tradition in Thailand that reflects the lifestyle of the Thai people and their long-standing connection to water, as well as their historical reliance on water transportation. Additionally, it is believed that floating krathongs is a way of asking for forgiveness from the Goddess of Water and symbolizes letting go of misfortunes into the flowing water.

In 2024, the Ministry of Culture aims to promote the cultural significance of this national festival and others, positioning it as a landmark event for international tourists. The goal is to elevate the Loi Krathong Festival to a World Event status, with an emphasis on safety measures alongside environmental conservation. This includes preventing water-related accidents and those caused by fireworks, as well as reducing waste from krathongs by using eco-friendly materials.

The Ministry of Culture is in the process of collecting data on the Loi Krathong Festival in Thailand to propose it for registration as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity with UNESCO. This initiative will further enhance the festival's international recognition.
