From Durian Peel Waste to Circular Textile Innovation

Thailand, the world’s largest producer and exporter of durian, has seen exports rise by nearly 488%, bringing strong economic growth alongside serious environmental challenges. Between 2017–2021, durian peel waste reached around 146 million kilograms per year and continues to grow. Most of this waste is currently landfilled or incinerated, creating long-term environmental pollution and
health concerns.

A research innovation from Chulalongkorn University has transformed durian peel waste into a circular textile suitable for clothing, marking the first development of its kind in Thailand. Tests show that fabric made from a 50:50 blend of silk and durian fiber offers nearly double the air permeability of 100% silk, making it more suitable for hot climates. The fabric also demonstrates strong antibacterial
performance, achieving up to 99.92% bacterial reduction.

The innovation can be developed into high-value products through two pathways: community-based production that integrates local weaving knowledge and handspun yarn, or industrial-scale manufacturing using ring-spinning techniques. Building on the research, the textile has been extended into contemporary fashion and lifestyle products that combine modern design with traditional handwoven patterns inspired by auspicious animal motifs, creating sustainable value from agricultural waste
