Mulberry paper is one of the traditional handicraft products with a long history in Thailand, particularly in the northern regions such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Sukhothai, and Nan. The production of mulberry paper not only generates export income valued at over 100 million baht per year, but also promotes cultural tourism worth up to 2 billion baht. Making mulberry paper is an activity that attracts both domestic and international tourists who can learn about and experience the traditional paper-making process.
The Department of Science Service (DSS), the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), has introduced technology and innovation to enhance mulberry paper production, aiming to increase the value and quality of the products. By utilising the mechanisms of science, research, and innovation, improvements are made throughout the process, from raw material preparation, paper production, creating patterns and colours, to processing products that meet the needs of customers and tourists. For example, the use of Ebru Marbling techniques, an art form that creates marble patterns on paper, adds uniqueness to the products and enhances the appeal of activities that tourists can participate in. The development of mulberry paper also aims to strengthen sustainable cultural tourism by improving product quality and refining production processes to suit tourism, including developing interesting places and activities for tourists, as well as providing advice and information to ensure a smooth welcome for visitors.
Elevating mulberry paper production through technology and innovation not only helps increase income for communities but also promotes the sustainable growth of cultural tourism. This development ensures that mulberry paper products have higher quality, are in demand in both domestic and international markets, and create engaging activities for tourists, which helps distribute income to local residents.
