The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), as the country’s principal state-owned power utility, is strengthening its role in advancing national decarbonization by promoting a transparent and inclusive Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) framework. Through collaboration with partners across the financial, real estate, and energy innovation sectors, EGAT is enabling broader access to REC registration and trading via the GreenPass platform. This initiative reflects the government’s policy direction to accelerate the transition to clean energy while ensuring that renewable energy benefits are distributed more widely across society.
Under this framework, households, small-scale solar rooftop owners, and SME operators are able to formally register and sell REC generated from renewable electricity in accordance with international standards. EGAT, as Thailand’s authorized REC issuing and certifying body under the I-TRACK system, plays a central role in safeguarding credibility, transparency, and fairness within the market. By expanding REC participation beyond large power producers to include distributed and community-based generation, the initiative supports the reduction of indirect greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 2) and creates a new pathway for public participation in the national clean energy transition.
This integrated approach demonstrates EGAT’s readiness to serve as a key national mechanism in driving Thailand toward carbon neutrality and Net Zero emissions. The collaboration strengthens the domestic REC market, enhances energy sector governance, and aligns economic incentives with environmental responsibility. By linking renewable energy production at the household level with nationally recognized certification and market mechanisms, EGAT is reinforcing Thailand’s long-term strategy for a low-carbon society while supporting sustainable and resilient economic growth.
