Efforts Pay Off! U.S. Proposes Removal of Thai Shrimp from Watch List

The positive results from the government's anti-human trafficking policies, particularly addressing child labor and forced child labor in the Thai fishing industry, have led to a significant development. Previously, Thai shrimp was categorized as a watch-listed product due to concerns over the use of inappropriate child labor and lack of control measures. This resulted in Thai shrimp imports undergoing multiple inspections, creating substantial trade obstacles.

The Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, overseeing the Department of Fisheries, recognized the importance of the global shrimp market, where Thailand had long held the top position. Thus, the government accelerated efforts to resolve child labor and forced child labor issues, which are of great international concern. Recently, the U.S. Department of Labor announced a proposal to remove Thai shrimp from the watch list after finding no evidence of forced child labor in its production. This development has significantly eased shrimp import issues.

Given this positive trend, it is anticipated that Thai shrimp export revenues will increase, and the reputation of Thai seafood will be restored in general. Shrimp farmers are expected to see improved incomes and better quality of life, benefiting both the economy and local communities.
