BIOTEC–IMCAS Advance Mushroom Technology for Mekong Region to Strengthen Food Security

The collaboration between Thailand’s BIOTEC and China’s IMCAS under the Lancang–Mekong Cooperation framework has created a platform for transferring advanced mushroom cultivation and processing technologies to Mekong countries. The workshop brought together researchers, farmers, and entrepreneurs to learn modern techniques that can enhance production, improve quality, and support the development of mushrooms as a high-potential alternative protein source for the region. China, as a global leader in mushroom production, shared its technological expertise to help Mekong countries close existing knowledge gaps and reduce reliance on imported mushroom products.

The event featured comprehensive knowledge exchange, including insights into China’s large-scale mushroom industry, trends in regional markets, genetic
mapping of edible mushrooms, processing innovations, and research on bioactive compounds such as beta-glucan. Contributions from Thailand showcased progress in mushroom breeding, commercial cultivation, and the development of value-added products, while neighboring countries like Laos and Vietnam highlighted their diverse wild mushroom resources and emerging herbal mushroom industries. The workshop emphasized the importance of science-based development to unlock the economic potential of mushrooms in Asia.

Participants also visited industrial mushroom farms in China to observe large-scale production systems and automated technologies. This field experience strengthened regional networks and opened avenues for further collaborations between research institutions and the private sector. The initiative is expected to support sustainable agricultural development, foster new industries, and enhance long-term food security across the Mekong region.
