Central Region - Bang Pa-In Royal Palace and Wat Niwet Thammaprawat Ratchaworawiharn/Khlong Lat Pho Floodgate Project

Central Region

There are many historical tourist attractions in the central region that are interesting and are chosen as destinations for both Thai and foreign tourists. Today, let's get to know three tourist attractions that can be traveled in one day trip.

Bang Pa-In Royal Palace

Bang Pa-In Palace is another interesting historical attraction as it is an old palace built during the Ayutthaya period. It is located in Ban Lane Sub-district, Bang Pa-in District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. Originally, Bang Pa-In Palace was abandoned for a long time until it was restored in the reign of King Rama IV.  Inside the Bang Pa-In Palace is divided into 2 parts, the inner royal court, which is the residence, and the outer royal court, which is open to the general public and tourists to visit both the Hem Monthian Thewarat Hall, the Royal Palace, Aisawan Thip-Asna Hall, Warophat Phiman Hall, Phumisathien Park Hall, Witoon Thasana Hall, Wehart Chamrun Hall, Inner Palace. When visiting this location, one must also pay respects to the Queen’s Shipwreck Monument, which King Rama V kindly erected in memory of Queen Sunantha Kumariratana, Beloved Empress Dowager, and Her Royal Highness Princess Kannaporn Petcharat. For those who are interested in visiting Bang Pa-In Palace, both men and women must dress in polite clothes.

Wat Niwet Thammaprawat Ratchaworawihan

Wat Niwet Thammaprawat Ratchaworawihan is located on a floating island in the middle of the Chao Phraya River, Ban Len Subdistrict, Bang Pa-in District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. It is a temple that King Rama V ordered to be built as a first-class royal temple to be used as a place to perform royal merit-making when he settled at Bang Pa-In Palace. The highlight is the use of Gothic architecture imitating Christian churches. The chapel is an art that combines western traditions together. Inside is enshrined Phra Phuttha Naruemol Thamophas as the principal Buddha image. In addition to the chapel, there are graveyards, rock gardens, and a museum to explore as well. This temple can only be reached by boat or by riding a cable car because it is situated on an island in the midst of the water.

Lat Pho Khlong Lat Pho Floodgate Project due to the Royal Initiative

His Majesty King Rama IX launched the Khlong Lat Pho Floodgate Project to examine using the Lat Pho Canal in Samut Prakan Province as a shortcut to drain the northern waters. This would help water drain out to the sea more quickly, and if the sea level is high, the door will be closed to prevent sea water from entering. Khlong Lat Pho floodgate project is located in the area of the lower Chao Phraya River. It was completed in 2005. It can shorten the drainage distance of the Chao Phraya River from 18 kilometers to 600 meters and reduce the time from 5 hours to 10 minutes. The average maximum drainage efficiency is 45-50 million cubic meters/day, helping to reduce the impact of flooding on areas along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok and its vicinity. “Khlong Lat Pho” is now a popular tourist destination in Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakan Province, close to Bangkok, in addition to serving as a means of flood prevention. This is because the area around Khlong Lat Pho has been transformed into a public park called “Lad Pho Health Garden”, which is attractive with small and large trees and used as a place for recreation and exercise. In the vicinity of Khlong Lat Pho, there are other tourist attractions such as Khlong Bang Ka Chao Community, Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park, also known as “Bang Krachao Garden” and “Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market”.
