Thailand has its own unique identity and culture. Foreigners traveling to Thailand should know some of the country’s norms and culture to make their trip more enjoyable and learn the way of life of Thai people.
1. A wai is a traditional Thai greeting often used for people of higher status or age. The wai can also mean thanking or apologizing, depending on the context.
2. Avoid touching other people’s head, as Thai people consider their head as the highest, most important thing. Do not touch or pass things over your head, either, as this is considered disrespectful.
3. Do not use your feet to push or point at objects. Thais consider their feet a low thing. People should not use their feet to point at others, or step over people or objects such as food or books.
4. Take off your shoes in a home. Thai people do not wear shoes in the house, as they carry in dirt from outside;only slippers may be worn.
5. Do not touch monks. According to Thai tradition, women are forbidden from touching monks in any way. In addition, one must dress properly when in temples.
6. The National Anthem is played at 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. every day, especially at public offices. If the national anthem is heard, one must stand straight to show respect.
