The inception of National Thai Language Day originated on Sunday, July 29, 1962, when His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great attended an academic conference on the Thai language at the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University. His Majesty presided over the conference and participated in a discussion on "The Problem of Using Thai Words" with Thai language experts, and graciously bestowed various ideas to encourage Thai people to maintain and use the Thai language correctly, clearly, and appropriately.
In remembrance of His Majesty King Rama IX's paramount kindness and to honor His Majesty's wisdom as a scholar and connoisseur of the Thai language, the Thai government, on the occasion of the auspicious 72nd Birthday Anniversary on December 5, 1999, declared July 29 of every year as "National Thai Language Day". This is to raise Thai people's awareness of the importance and value of the Thai language, leading to a joint effort to nurture and preserve the Thai language, which is a distinctive and valuable cultural asset that should remain with the Thai nation perpetually.
On this day, educational institutions, government agencies, and private organizations collaborate to organize various activities such as exhibitions, academic discussions, contests for composing verses, recitations, story-telling, and so on.
