Cultural Map Thailand: A system for collecting cultural data and resources to enhance local community economies and identities

     The “Cultural Map Thailand" is a collection of cultural information on a website, compiled by the cultural community owners. It includes opening up areas for cultural entrepreneurs to present and sell cultural products and services; it comprises research results that, if widely recognized, would help to elevate the local economy and people’s consciousness, and to generate greater benefits. It also involves collecting cultural data and mapping cultural resources as part of the research project series "University and Cultural Capital Driving for Regional Development."

    Cultural mapping, also known as "cultural resource mapping" or "cultural landscape mapping," is a concern shared by various organizations, including UNESCO and the public sector, done to preserve and maintain cultural diversity.

    This is a description of tools and important methods for conserving cultural heritage, which is a valuable asset in terms of culture. It can be done in various ways, starting from community participation and moving on to using sophisticated tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to create maps that show both tangible and intangible cultural properties of a local community within a particular region.

     Creating cultural maps requires not only knowledge and skills in mapping, but also in anthropology, sociology, history and archaeology, genealogy, linguistics, geography, morphology, musicology, botany, and forestry. This information requires tools and methods beyond general mapping techniques.

     The cultural map of Thailand compiled in www.culturalmapthailand.info is considered the "first cultural map website in Thailand." It is a cultural information system that collects, processes, and standardizes data in 48 categories, while the cultural category information shown in the map is based on brainstorming from cultural experts and system data from 2,621 research datasets.

    Once you enter www.culturalmapthailand.info and select the "cultural map," you can search for information by entering keywords or selecting "tangible" and "intangible" cultural categories, as well as selecting the province. Moreover, you can choose from 11 categories of cultural heritage:

  1. Antiquities;
  2. Architecture;
  3. Archaeological sites;
  4. Cultural landscapes;
  5. Language;
  6. Traditional culture;
  7. Knowledge and practices related to nature and the universe;
  8. Performing arts;
  9. Traditional Thai games;
  10. Social practices, rituals, and festivals;
  11. Traditional crafts.

     Cultural Map Thailand is a research project funded by the Program Management Unit on Area Based Development (PMU A) and will be developed into the "Cultural Atlas of Thailand" and "Cultural Metaverse Thailand" in the future.
