"Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi Motorway" - transportation and logistics network: The gateway to western Thailand's trade

     The "Bang Yai - Kanchanaburi Motorway" or the M81 Intercity Highway is a significant project under Thailand's transportation infrastructure development plan and is deemed an urgent necessity. It is included in the Action Plan of the Ministry of Transport and the Public-Private Partnership Fast Track (PPP Fast Track) to expedite investments in large-scale projects.

     The said project is considered as a convenient, fast, and safer alternative for traveling and freight transportation. It will enhance the quality of life of the public and develop into a strategic route to supplement the transportation and logistics network. Additionally, it serves as a gateway for the potential and competitive trade in the Western Region of Thailand.

     The project's design includes 4 to 6 lanes covering a total distance of 96 kilometers. It begins at the outer ring road of Bangkok (Kanjanapisek Road) in the west at Bang Yai District, Nonthaburi Province, and ends at Highway No. 324 (Kanchanaburi-Phanom Thuan Road), passing through 4 provinces including Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Nakhon Pathom, and Kanchanaburi.

Throughout the route, there will be interchanges linking the project to eight main highway projects as follows:

1. Bang Yai Interchange, connecting with Highway No. 9 and Rattanathibet Road (Highway No. 302)
2. Nakhon Chaisri Interchange (Highway No. 3323)
3. Nakhon Chaisri Junction (Motorway No. 91)
4. East Nakhon Pathom Interchange (Highway No. 3036)
5. West Nakhon Pathom Interchange (Highway No. 321)
6. Tha Maka Interchange (Highway No. 3394)
7. Tha Muang Interchange (Highway No. 3081)
8. Kanchanaburi Interchange (Highway No. 324)     

     There are 8 toll booths: Bang Yai, Nakhon Chaisri, Srisathong, East Nakhon Pathom, West Nakhon Pathom, Tha Maka, Tha Muang, and Kanchanaburi.

     There are 3 rest areas and other facilities for road users, including 2 service stations at Nakhon Chaisri and Mueang Nakhon Pathom and 1 rest area at Tha Maka.

Toll rates are as follows:

• 4-wheel vehicles: an initial fee of 10 Baht and an additional 1.50 Baht per kilometer, up to a maximum of 150 Baht
• 6-wheel vehicles: an initial fee of 16 Baht and an additional 2.40 Baht per kilometer, up to a maximum of 240 Baht
• Vehicles with more than 6 wheels: an initial fee of 23 Baht and an additional 3.45 Baht per kilometer, up to a maximum of 350 Baht

     The construction is currently 90.21% complete and the installation of systems and other components has progressed by 13.62%.

     Upon completion, the travel time from Bang Yai to Kanchanaburi will be reduced to just 50 minutes compared to the 2 hours 30 minutes currently taken using the national highway. The motorway is expected to be operational by 2025.
