The 13th International Renewable Energy Assembly was organized in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, as the Head of the Ministry Delegation of Thailand, attended the 13th International Renewable Energy Assembly (or the 13th IRENA Assembly) in Abu Dhabi, on January 14 and 15, 2023. The annual general meeting was organized among ministers and senior delegates to discuss the energy policies of more than 167 member countries and the United Nations. Furthermore, this conference included a coalition of private sector executives and energy partnership organizations, who shared their opinions concerning energy policy and gave advice on the guidelines to develop suitable policies and measures that they considered suitable for clean energy development, in order to push up the global energy transitions. This conference focused on the consultation under the main concept of “World Energy Transition –The Global Stocktake.”
On this occasion, the Secretary of the Ministry of Energy gave a speech to report on the clean energy development status of Thailand by confirming the commitment of Thailand to focus on the economic and social objectives of a low-carbon economy and society, together with the intention to achieve carbon neutrality in 2027 and the objective to release NET Zero carbon emissions. In 2022, there was the adaptation of the policy and measures both in the production promotion policy and renewable energy usage (such as wind energy, and solar energy), together with the infrastructure energy development plan and the financial promotion measure to serve the clean energy development, and the adaptation of Bio-economy, circular economy, and green economy concept or BCG Economic Model to promote the effectiveness of local energy resource usage.
Additionally, the Secretary gave a speech at the round table ministerial conference about the ASEAN region’s energy transition by emphasizing the uniqueness of ASEAN member countries in their ability to accelerate the objective of clean energy and reduce carbon emissions from energy sectors under the ASEAN Strategic Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC). Thailand showed its eagerness and intention to push the expansion of clean energy coalition activities with IRENA and member countries, both in cooperation in the study of the clean energy capacity in Thailand, such as hydrogen (H2) and ammonia energy, as well as information sharing and knowledge transfer to develop the human resources potentials of clean energy in Thailand. This would be beneficial for Thailand in promoting the accessibility of sustainable clean energy in the future.
