Indonesia Registers GI for "Sang Yod Phattalung Rice" and "Thung Kula Rong-Hai Thai Hom Mali Rice" - ensuring the quality of Thai products

Thai products receive growing international recognition, especially Geographical Indications (GIs) -- which are quality products unique to each community --, generating income and pride for the Kingdom.

Specifically, two types of Thai rice, namely, Sang Yod from Phattalung province and Thung Kula Rong-Hai Thai Hom Mali rice, have been registered by the Republic of Indonesia as Geographical Indications (GIs). This follows the registration of Lamphun's Yok Dok silk as a GI product in Indonesia in 2016. This reinforces the quality of Thai rice at the global level and will help to expand the export market for Thai rice into Indonesia. It will also create jobs and generate income for local farmers cultivating these two types of rice.

Sang Yod rice from Phattalung is notable for its small, soft grains with a faint aroma. The husked grain has a reddish to dark red color, while the rice is white mixed with red or pink. Each year, more than 8,000 tons are produced, generating over 104 million baht in income for local farmers.

Meanwhile, Thung Kula Rong-Hai Thai Hom Mali rice is characterized by its long, slender grains without any awns. When cooked, it has a fragrant aroma and is soft. It is grown in five provinces of the northeastern region, namely, Roi Et, Surin, Sisaket, Maha Sarakham, and Yasothon. Each year, more than 24,500 tons are produced, generating over 266 million baht in income for local farmers.

So far, the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Commerce, has pushed for the registration of eight Thai GI products abroad. These include Thung Kula Rong-Hai Thai Hom Mali rice, Sang Yod Phattalung rice, Doi Chang coffee, Doi Tung coffee, Thai Isan native silk, Lamphun's Yok Dok silk, Petchabun sweet tamarind, and Lamphun's golden dried longan. These cover over 30 countries, including the European Union, India, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
