Cultural Tourism: "Bam Muek" Traditional Fishing in Chumphon

Nobody would have thought that fishing and the way of life of fishermen would be interesting to people from outside or that they would also like to experience it once in their life.

At Kram Bay, or Ban Ao Kram, at Dan Sawee Subdistrict, Sawee District in Chumphon, there is a community of fishermen whose way of life is fascinating and unique, and it is called the one and only Bam Muek, where they use a process from local wisdom to catch squid and octopus. They stretch a net by tightening each corner to pillars in the sea, and then they hang a lampabove the net to attract the squid. After a while, they pull the net up from the water and use a spoon-net to get the squid. These squid can be used as an ingredient when cooking all kinds of dishes, or you can eat them raw with Thai spicy seafood dip.

You can stay at a homestay near the beach at Kram Bay and enjoy local food. There are not many facilities at the accommodation, but you’ll have a wide space to picnic. You can take a sightseeing trip on a boat to view spectacled lemur. Along with the scenery and calm lifestyle, what makes this place unique and memorable is their food, especially seafood. Their curry is totally delicious. For these reasons, Ban Ao Kram is truly fascinating.
